Salt of the Earth

If you told the "Old Chris"—the one navigating life between heart attacks—that the "New Chris" would be actively salting his steak, drinking salty bone broth, and worrying about getting enough sodium, he would have thought you were trying to kill him. We have been conditioned to fear the salt shaker. For decades, the medical mantra for heart health has been singular and absolute: "Lower your sodium." We are told that salt raises blood pressure, strains the heart, and causes strokes. So, as a man with five heart attacks in his history, why have I stopped fearing the shaker? Because I learned that biology is all about context . And in the context of a clean keto lifestyle, salt isn't the villain. It’s the battery fluid that keeps my engine running. Part 1: The "High Blood Pressure" Myth (It’s About Insulin) The advice to cut salt is generally good advice... if you are eating the Standard American Diet. The Mechanism: When you eat a high-ca...

Night Shift

In the world of clean keto, we obsess over macros. We track grams of fat, we count grams of protein, and we ruthlessly eliminate grams of carbs. We treat our bodies like complex equations, believing that if we just get the inputs right, the output (health/weight loss) will be perfect. But for a long time, I was ignoring a variable that was just as important as the steak on my plate. I used to treat sleep like a nuisance—a "time tax" I had to pay between days of working, gaming, and stressing. I thought I could "hack" it with caffeine and willpower. I was wrong. I’ve learned that sleep is not a passive state of "doing nothing." It is an active, metabolically critical period where your body does its most important work. You can eat the cleanest, grass-fed, organic diet in the world, but if you are sleep-deprived, your body will function like it’s running on sugar and stress. Sleep is the "Missing Macro." And here is the science of why it’s a non-ne...

The Tale of Two Engines

One of the core premises of this blog is that my clean keto lifestyle is more than just a diet; it's a fundamental shift in my body's entire operating system. To understand the "why" behind any of my "rules," we first have to look at the fuel. Think of the human body as a high-performance hybrid car. It's designed with two different engines that can run on two completely different types of fuel: The Glucose Engine: A small, high-octane "nitrous" tank. It burns hot, fast, and runs out quickly. The Fat Engine: A massive, clean, efficient "diesel" tank. It burns for days, providing steady, reliable, long-range power. The problem with the "Standard Western Diet" is that it teaches our bodies to only use the small, fast-burning glucose engine. We become "metabolically inflexible," spending our entire lives just lurching from one sugary "refuel" to the next, all while sitting on top of a massive, untapped t...
